PROJECT OVERVIEW
This case study explores my illustration work for Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, focusing on themes of mental health, identity, and societal pressures faced by women in the 1950s.
GOAL
Originally created as a book cover for an illustration class, the project evolved into a broader exploration of visual storytelling and thematic interpretation.
PURPOSE OF THE CASE STUDY
I created all illustrations in Procreate, developing a somber, moody palette of burgundy, blush, gray, and cream to reflect the book’s atmosphere. This case study highlights my process of translating literary themes into cohesive and impactful visuals.
PROCESS & OUTCOME
The project began with research into the novel, Sylvia Plath’s life, and visual symbols associated with the story’s themes, including mental health and societal pressures. I created all illustrations, designed mockups of the book cover and interior pages, and developed conceptual digital assets for a fictional website, Mindful Reads.
RESULTS
This case study challenged me to stretch beyond my usual nature-inspired, colorful work and create a cohesive, serious, and concept-driven visual narrative.
REFLECTION
It demonstrates my skills in illustration, layout, color theory, and thematic storytelling, as well as my ability to adapt my style to new, challenging subject matter.
